July Summer School Information

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The July session of the West Plains School District summer school program will offer different options to tailor your child’s learning experience to work best for your family.  Elementary, middle school, and high school students may choose from a fully virtual experience, seated classes, or a blend of online and seated classes.  

Here is some important information about the July session of summer school - (July 6-30):

  • Open house for kindergarten will be July 2 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the West Plains Elementary with social distancing guidelines followed.
  • Students in kindergarten through 8th grade that will ride a bus can check on their bus routes at the open house.  Students that enroll later will be routed for transportation as soon as possible.  Transportation is not available for high school students.  
  • In order to keep our students safe, we will not be allowing students to be switched to a bus that is not their normal route bus.  This is to limit cross contamination and allow contact tracing if there were to be a positive case.  If your student usually rides the bus and you need a different option in the afternoon, you will need to arrange pick up by calling the elementary office at 256-6158 by 2pm. 

 

Classes

Exploring our national parks is the summer school theme for our K-8 students.  

Our National Parks have been called “America’s Best Idea.” Congress’s vision was to set aside our most significant places as public lands for all to enjoy. Nearly 100 years later, we are learning that these 401 sites, ranging from the beauty of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite, are outdoor classrooms that can inspire and engage a generation of students in ways that no other experience, in or out of the classroom, can.

Virtual Option

Students who choose the virtual option will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace from home with online classes through Google classroom by West Plains School District instructors.  

Seated Option

To ensure the health and wellbeing of students and staff, West Plains School District will follow practices in accordance with recommendations from the Howell County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control.  Examples of precautionary measures that will be followed for seated courses include:

  • Class sizes will be limited to 14 students, and social distancing will be practiced to ensure adequate physical separation is maintained.
  • Visitors to schools and the classroom will not be permitted. Schools will be closed to visitors aside from drop off and pick up, which can only occur via the carline.
  • It is the expectation of the district that students be dropped off in the car drop off line. Parents should remain in their vehicle to promote social distancing. Staff will be out front to help welcome and escort your child into the building.
  • Handwashing and infection prevention instruction will be required and taught to students.
  • Student face coverings are recommended but not required.
  • Assemblies and field trips will not be permitted.

Blended Option 

Students who choose the blended option will go to the appropriate building for the seated portion of their classes. High school students will meet at the Zizzer Pride Academy for the seated portion of classes. Small class sizes will also be maintained for the seated portion of the blended option. 

Students will be divided into two groups:

  • Group 1 will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays with virtual instruction on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
  • Group 2 will meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays with virtual instruction on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.                             
  • If the virtual or blended options are not created, the student may sign up for the seated option.  

Meals

Students who are attending seated and blended courses will be served breakfast and lunch each day they are at school.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

  • All parents teach healthy habits to children before summer school begins.
  • Educate your child on viruses and the signs of illness.
  • Teach appropriate hand washing, good hygiene, and social distancing.
  • Help explain to your child why material sharing will be limited right now.
  • Teach your child how to wipe down surfaces at home, as they will also use disinfectant wipes on their desk at school.
  • Teach your child how to appropriately wear a mask and when to use them (if desired).
  • All teachers reinforce healthy habits for children during summer school.
  • Educate students on viruses and the signs of illness.
  • Make time in the day for good hand washing.
  • Have students maintain personal supplies versus communal supplies.
  • Have students wipe down desks daily.
  • Teach students how to maintain social distancing.
  • Measures will be taken to decrease students congregating in one location.
  • Students will report straight to their classroom upon entering the building, and staff will monitor to ensure no congregating occurs.
  • Students will be required to stay with their assigned class and not co-mingle with other classrooms.
  • Restroom breaks will be scheduled by classroom, outside emergencies, with good hand washing after use.
  • Students will sit at individual desks when available; otherwise, no more than two at a table, and they should be on opposite ends.
  • In locations where students line up, teachers will help promote social distancing.

Minimizing Building Access

To minimize the need for people to be in the building other than necessary employees and students, the district requests the following:

  • Parents are encouraged to call ahead if they have a need to visit the school, outside emergency situations.
  • Parents will not be allowed beyond the school entryway, outside emergency situations.
  • Parents will not be allowed to visit the classroom or eat lunch with their child.
  • Visitors, outside necessary employees providing student instruction and student services, will not be allowed in the building.

HEALTH PROTOCOL

Students and employees will adopt these hygiene measures.

  • All persons are required to wash hands or use hand sanitizer when they come to school and throughout the school day.
  • Encourage students to leave personal items at home, including backpacks, unless necessary. If brought, backpacks must be stored separately from others. 
  • Require all persons to wash hands after blowing noses, coughing, or sneezing or when in contact with bodily fluids.
  • Encourage classes and employees to create their own hand signals to replace shaking hands, hugging, or giving high-fives.
  • Avoid using classroom items that are frequently touched but not easily cleaned , such as fabric.
  • Students and employees will be excluded from school if they test positive for COVID-19 or exhibit one or more of the symptoms of COVID-19 based on CDC guidance that is not otherwise explained.
  • A fever of 100 F or greater. 
  • Cough.
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Chills.
  • Repeated shaking with chills.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Headache.
  • Sore throat.
  • New loss of taste or smell.
  • However, additional criteria for exclusion may be provided by the local health department at the time of exclusion based on the most current CDC guidance.

Students (with assistance from parents) and employees should self-screen prior to coming to school or expect to be screened before entering the school building. Those exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 without other obvious explanations will be prohibited from coming to school, and if they do come to school, they will be sent home immediately.

Wearing Masks and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Any person is welcome to wear a mask or PPE in the school building.
  • Parents who send their child with a mask should teach them appropriate usage.
  • If a mask or other PPE is disruptive to the educational environment, the principal may call the parent/guardian with possible removal from summer school.

Return to School After Exclusion

Once a student or employee is excluded from the school environment, they may return only if they satisfy the recommendations of the current CDC guidelines, which are subject to change. At the time of writing this document, the CDC guidelines state:

  1. Untested. Persons who have not received a test proving or disproving the presence of COVID-19 but have experienced symptoms consistent with COVID-19 may return when all three of the following conditions are met:
  2. They have not had a fever for at least 72 hours (that is three (3) full days of no fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers); and
  3. Other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath has improved); and
  4. At least ten (10) calendar days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
  5. Tested. Persons who have experienced symptoms and have tested positive for COVID-19 may return when all three of the following conditions are met:
  6. They no longer have a fever (without the use of medicine that reduces fevers); and
  7. Other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath has improved); and
  8. They have received two (2) negative tests in a row, at least 24 hours apart.
  9. Tested with no symptoms. Persons who have not had symptoms but have tested positive for COVID-19 may return when they have received two (2) negative tests in a row, at least 24 hours apart.

Siblings or Other Students in the Household

If a student is excluded from school due to COVID-19 symptoms or has had a positive COVID-19 test, his or her siblings or other students living in the same household will be quarantined for 14 (fourteen) days past the date that the excluded sibling is released. The district will continue to consult with local health authorities for further guidance in this instance.

 

Self-Quarantine

If a student or employee has recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 symptoms or diagnosed with COVID-19 or has recently traveled from somewhere considered to be a “hot spot” by the CDC, the district may exclude the student or employee from the school building and recommend that they self-quarantine for 14 calendar days.

 

District Response to Exclusion from School or Self-Quarantine

As soon as the district becomes aware of a student or employee that may have COVID-19 or that has been excluded from school or recommended to self-quarantine, the custodial staff will be informed so that all desks, lockers, and workspaces of the person are thoroughly disinfected. If the school is not open when a notification occurs, the custodial staff will wait 24 hours or as long as possible prior to disinfecting and instead will block off the area so that others do not have contact. However, if that is not possible or school is in session, the cleaning will occur immediately.

 

Separation While in School

Each school must have a room or space separate from the nurse’s office where students or employees who may have COVID-19 or another communicable disease will wait to be evaluated or for pickup. Students will be given a mask to wear. Only essential staff and students assigned to the room may enter, all will sign in so that there is a record of the persons who entered the room, and the room will be disinfected several times throughout the day. Strict social distancing is required, and staff must wear appropriate PPE. Students who are ill will be walked out of the building to their parents.

 

Care Rooms for Students with Physical Needs

Each school will designate a location separate from the nurse’s office for the care of students with special care needs such as suctioning, tube feeding and nebulizers to minimize exposure to students who might be ill. The room will be disinfected frequently, and all staff members present will wear appropriate PPE. The student will be provided a mask.

 

Confirmed Case of COVID-19 in the School Building

When there is confirmation that a person infected with COVID-19 was in a school building for a sustained time period under circumstances where transmission was likely to occur, the District will contact the local health department immediately. Unless extenuating circumstances exist, the District will close the school building for a minimum of 2-5 days and work with the local health department to assess factors such as the likelihood of exposure to employees and students in the building, the number of cases in the community and other factors that will determine when the building should re-open.

The District will contact parents/students and employees and notify them that a person who tested positive for COVID-19 was in the building and encourage cooperation with the District and the local health department to trace contacts with the individual. The individual who tested positive will not be identified in communications to the school community at large but may need to be selectively identified for contact tracing by the health department.

While the school building is closed, all school activities may be canceled or rescheduled, regardless of whether the activity was to take place in the building or another location, including extracurricular activities, before and after-school programs, and field trips. Parents/students and employees may be encouraged to stay at home until more information is provided by the district or the health department.
