2025 Distinguished Zizzer Alumnus - Jim Thompson

During the 2025 West Plains High School graduation ceremony, longtime community leader and former West Plains R-VII Board of Education member Mr. Jim Thompson was recognized as the 2025 Distinguished Zizzer Alumnus. A 1969 graduate of West Plains High School, Thompson dedicated 37 years of service to the board, helping guide the district through decades of growth and change.

First elected in 1987, Thompson’s leadership was marked by a deep commitment to students, staff, and the district's success. His student centered approach, steady presence, and long-term vision made a lasting impact on generations of Zizzers.

Professionally, Thompson’s background includes radio and cable television with the Neathery family, co-ownership of Schwegman Office Supply, and service as Assistant Director of Development at MSU–West Plains. In 2001, he joined Air Evac, continuing his career in support of essential services.

His community involvement has been just as impactful. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club of West Plains Sunrise, a founding member and current vice president of the Community Foundation of West Plains, and an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church–LCMS. Thompson also spent many years mentoring youth through Boy Scout Troop 61, serving as both Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster.

A proud father and grandfather of West Plains graduates, Thompson’s roots in the district run deep. “There is no better way to serve the community than to do something that provides our children the opportunity to grow and learn,” he said. “To have some small part in helping shape who they will become and, in the process, shape our future, is humbling.”

As a 37-year board member, Thompson witnessed the district’s evolution and helped shape its path forward. His induction into the Zizzer Distinguished Hall of Fame honors a lifetime of service, leadership, and unwavering support for public education.
