West Plains High School Places in Top Ten Percent in Academics
The West Plains School District is proud to announce that West Plains High School performed in the top 10% of the State of Missouri in three of the four tested content areas. Superintendent of schools, Dr. John Mulford, commented on the high school’s performance: “This recognition is a testament to the work we are doing in our local schools. The teachers at our high school continue to build upon the solid foundation that these students receive during their elementary and middle school years. As we work toward the future, our goal is to couple a strong understanding of content with the skills needed for success in the 21st workforce.”
Each year, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MODESE) calculates academic achievement and subgroup achievement for each of the 522 public school districts of Missouri. There are 1,020 high schools in Missouri, made up of 832 public schools and 188 private schools. All academic reports are ranked and the 10th and 90th percentiles are determined.
Missouri High Schools are required to administer exit examinations for students in English II, Algebra I, Biology, and Government. For the spring 2016 MODESE ranking of schools, West Plains High School scored in the TOP 10% of all high schools in Missouri for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.
Dr. Julie Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment stated, “There are a wide range of factors which influence academic achievement. Instructional effectiveness is a combination of high quality instructors; a positive, well-designed learning environment; and parental involvement. We are beyond appreciative of the core partnership with our parents and community and look forward to continued opportunities to include, engage, and partner for student educational success.”
